PUBLIC HEALTH ASSESSMENT
CASSWOOD TREATED PRODUCTS
BEARDSTOWN, CASS COUNTY, ILLINOIS
The Casswood site currently poses no apparent public health hazard; however, some potential exposure pathways, especially regarding trespassers and area private well users, need further investigation to conclusively categorize the site. Groundwater treatment has significantly reduced the potential for exposure to contaminants at hazardous levels in the public water supply.
Other exposures may be occurring from media not adequately evaluated, specifically private well water. On-site workers, area workers, and trespassers are assumed to be exposed to on-site contaminants. Exposure doses for these persons are not likely at levels that are expected to cause adverse health effects. However, if future on-site activities increase (construction, digging, driving), those activities could increase the likelihood of exposure to on-site contaminants and could potentially become a health concern.
The separate phase hydrocarbon layer found on top of the groundwater may present a future contamination source.
The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has provided to and discussed the recommendations made in this public health assessment with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). IDPH will continue to coordinate efforts with IDNR and EPA at the site until no threat of exposure remains.
