Table 1 Summary of Birth Defect Check Box Categories in the
Texas Birth Certificate and Fetal Death Certificate (11)
Category of Birth Defect Description of Birth Defect Category
Anencephalus Congenital absence of the cranial vault, with cerebral hemispheres completely missing or reduced to small masses attached to the base of the skull.
Spina Bifida / meningocele A developmental anomaly characterized by defective closure of the bony encasement of the spinal cord, through which the cord and meninges may or may not protrude.
Hydrocephalus A condition characterized by abnormal accumulation of fluid in the cranial vault, accompanied by enlargement of the head.
Microcephalus Abnormal smallness of the head.
Other central nervous system anomalies
Heart malformations Malformations of the heart.
Other circulatory / respiratory anomalies
Rectal atresia / stenosis Atresia (imperforation; absence or closure of normal opening) or stenosis (narrowing) of the rectum or anus.
Tracheo-esophageal fistula / esophageal atresia Tracheo-esophageal fistula: opening between the trachea and esophagus. Atresia: absence of open canal of the esophagus.
Omphalocele / gastroschisis Protrusion at birth of part of the intestine through a large defect in the abdominal wall. In omphalocele, usually covered by a thin membrane. Different etiologies.
Other gastrointestinal anomalies
Malformed genitalia
Renal agenesis Congenital absence of one or both kidneys.
Other urogenital anomalies
Cleft lip/palate Fissure or gap in the upper lip and/or palate.
Polydactyly / syndactyly Polydactyly: too many fingers or toes.
Syndactyly: fingers or toes fused together.
Limb reductions Parts of hand, arm, foot, or legs missing.
Club foot A deformity of the foot in which it is twisted out of shape or position, referred to medically as talipes.
Diaphragmatic hernia The protrusion of an organ through a defect in the diaphragm.
Other musculoskeletal / integumental anomalies
Down syndrome A chromosomal abnormality characterized by moderate to severe mental retardation, epicanthal folds in eyes, sloping forehead, flat-bridged nose, short phalanges. Caused by an extra chromosome 21 (trisomy 21). Old name: mongolism (due to characteristic eye features).
Other chromosomal anomalies Several, including trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome), trisomy 18 (Edward syndrome).
Other congenital anomalies Catchall category, if something present that doesn't fit into one of the categories above.
