| Down syndrome | A chromosomal abnormality characterized by moderate to severe mental retardation, epicanthal folds in eyes, sloping forehead, flat-bridged nose, short phalanges. Caused by an extra chromosome 21 (trisomy 21). Old name: mongolism (due to characteristic eye features). |
| Other chromosomal anomalies | Several, including trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome), trisomy 18 (Edward syndrome). |
