APPENDIX C
Ingestion Rate Calculations for Pond 3:
RMCR = (R x BW x 365 x ET) / (CSF x C x IR x ED)
where:
| R = risk | 1 x 10-5 |
| BW = body weight | 70 kg |
| ET = exposure time | 70 years |
| CSF = cancer slope factor (PCBs) | 4.95 kg-day/mg |
| C = concentration of contaminant | 0.116 mg/kg |
| IR = ingestion rate | 0.228 kg/meal |
| ED = exposure duration | 7 years |
| RMCR = recommended maximum consumption rate | meals/year |
| RMCR | = (1 x 10-5 x 70 x 365 x 70) / (4.95 x 0.116 x 0.228 x 7) |
| = 19 meals/year |
As stated in demographic information in the Background section, the median residency of heads
of households are as follows: Lexington Park census tract, 2.1 years; NAS Patuxent River census
tract, 5.0 years; and St. Mary's County, 5.4 years. Using this information as a guide, we selected
7 years as a reasonable exposure duration. Only persons associated with NAS Patuxent River
may fish the ponds, and they must obtain permits through the Department of Natural Resources
on base. Educational materials are handed out with the permits including size, creel, and
consumption limits. A consumption limit of 19 fish meals/year for no more than 7 years and the
alternative, a lifetime consumption limit of 133 fish meals, can be easily conveyed to NAS
Patuxent River's fishing constituency.
