CONCLUSIONS
ATSDR and IDPH have concluded, based on the information reviewed, that the site currently poses no public health hazard.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Consider institutional controls to prevent the installation of new water supply wells within the contaminated aquifer.
Maintain and enforce restricted site access.
Address groundwater contamination as needed.
Proceed to the operation and maintenance stage, which will include activities such as
inspection and maintenance of the floating cover, capped soil areas, and fences.
PUBLIC HEALTH ACTION PLAN
The Public Health Action Plan for the Mid-America Tanning site contains a description of actions to
be taken by IDPH and ATSDR regarding the site subsequent to the completion of this public health
assessment. The purpose of the Public Health Action Plan is to ensure that this public health
assessment not only identifies public health hazards, but provides a plan of action designed to
mitigate and prevent adverse human health effects resulting from exposure to hazardous substances
in the environment. The public health actions to be implemented by IDPH and ATSDR are as
follows:
A. Actions Undertaken
Physical hazards have been removed from the site.
Remedial actions have removed contaminated soils and surface water from the site.
B. Actions Planned
New environmental data will be reviewed that may become available to determine if other public
health actions are indicated.
IDPH and ATSDR are available to address any community concerns that may arise during remedial activities at the site.
