PETITIONED PUBLIC HEALTH ASSESSMENT

T.H. AGRICULTURE AND NUTRITION (ALBANY)
ALBANY, DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GEORGIA

CONCLUSIONS

Based on ATSDR's review and evaluation of relevant environmental sampling data, ATSDR concluded the THAN site poses no apparent public health hazard. Specifically, ATSDR concludes:

  • Available air sampling data indicate that contaminants were not at levels of health concern before or during the LTTD of on-site soils from the western parcel in 1993.
  • Contaminant levels detected in surface water and sediment in the south pond and the depression area are below levels of health concern; they are, therefore, not likely to pose a health hazard to children using the pond for an annual fishing rodeo.
  • Monitoring data for the perimeter wells installed at the outer edges of the plume have not indicated contamination at levels of health concern. This review of perimeter wells indicated no expectation that off-site private wells have been affected by site contamination.
  • Under site-specific conditions of exposure, cancer effects would not be expected as a result of contact with site-related contaminants at the levels detected.

RECOMMENDATIONS

ATSDR recommends:

  • Continue monitoring groundwater wells at and near the THAN site.
  • Sample private wells in the vicinity of the THAN site if perimeter monitoring wells should ever exhibit contamination at levels of health concern.

PUBLIC HEALTH ACTION PLAN

The actions described in this section are designed to ensure that this public health assessment not only identifies public health hazards but provides a plan of action to mitigate and prevent adverse health effects that could result from exposure to hazardous substances in the environment. ATSDR will evaluate additional environmental data for public health significance, upon request, and revise the conclusions of this public health assessment, if necessary.

PUBLIC COMMENT

ATSDR released the T.H. Agriculture & Nutrition Public Health Assessment for public review and comment from September 30 through November 22, 1999. No comments or concerns were received and the document has been finalized.
