SPOKANE RIVER-WASHINGTON STATE COMMON USE AREA SEDIMENT
CHARACTERIZATION: REVIEW OF THE DRAFT FIELD SAMPLING PLAN
SPOKANE, SPOKANE COUNTY, WASHINGTON

DISCUSSION

The Spokane River-Washington State Common Use Area Sediment Characterization provides a plan to collect sediment samples that will allow an assessment of risks to human health.2 Twenty-five sampling locations were chosen based upon multiple criteria including: accessibility, usage, and previous sampling data. The SRHD is very concerned about the potential impacts that metals may be having on the public, specifically on children that may be exposed to metal contamination during recreational use at the Spokane River, as well as in their homes.3 The sampling plan is designed to collect sediments and analyze them for metal contamination. The focus of these sediment sampling and evaluation activities will be to assess exposure through the ingestion and dermal absorption pathways.
