HEALTH CONSULTATION
CIRCUITRON CORPORATION
FARMINGDALE, NASSSU COUNTY, NEW YORK
CONCLUSION
Based on presumed past exposures to volatile organic compounds such as 1,1,1-trichloroethane and trichloroethene in a public drinking water supply, the site posed a public health hazard, according to ATSDR's current public health hazard categories (Appendix D), to the local residents for some unknown period of time up to 1977. In 1977, the major exposure route (contaminated municipal drinking water supply well) was removed. The site currently poses no apparent public health hazard as ingestion of contaminated drinking water is not occurring and is not expected to occur in the future.
The remedial activities completed and those planned for this site are protective of public health. The demolition of the Circuitron building and removal of contaminated soils and sediments eliminated the potential for exposure to any residual contamination remaining in the structure or in on-site soils. Implementation of the groundwater treatment system for the Circuitron Site will remove contamination from the Upper Glacial Aquifer and prevent site-related contaminants from affecting the Magothy Aquifer, which is used as a source of drinking water.
The NYS DOH recommends implementation of the remedial activities planned for the Circuitron site. Construction of the groundwater treatment system should proceed in a timely manner. The NYS DOH will review the worker and community heath and safety plan and provide appropriate recommendations prior to commencement of remedial activities.
