HEALTH CONSULTATION

DECATUR/BARDING & SPAWR LANDFILL
DECATUR, MACON COUNTY, ILLINOIS

CONCLUSIONS

IDPH concludes that the Decatur/Barding and Spawr site currently does not pose an apparant public health hazard;however, if private well water becomes contaminated with levels of contaminants found in monitoring wells, a publichealth hazard would exist. Arsenic found in one private well poses a health hazard if that level is ingested for a long periodof time. Only one sample was collected from that well 4 years ago. IDPH cannot fully evaluate the residents exposure withonly one sample.

The site is accessible to trespassers, and physical hazards are present on the site.

RECOMMENDATIONS

IDPH makes the following recommendations:

  1. Restrict public access to the site.
  2. Prevent use of on-site groundwater for drinking water.
  3. Collect additional on-site and off-site groundwater samples and include both on and off site private well samples. Specifically resample private well GW08 and facility well GW06. Provide the data to IDPH for evaluation of any public health impact.
  4. Collect leachate samples and monitor leachate.
