HEALTH CONSULTATION

DU QUOIN GAS PLANT
(a/k/a DUQUOIN MANUFACTURED GAS PLANT)
DU QUOIN, PERRY COUNTY, ILLINOIS

CONCLUSIONS

IDPH concludes that:

  1. Current conditions at the DuQuoin Manufactured Gas Plant site pose no apparent public health hazard to the general population. Contaminated soil, sediment and lagoon material were removed, backfilled, and covered with a 6-inch cap. Site restoration was completed in May 1997.
  2. Excavation activities during the remediation did generate elevated air concentrations of PAHs and benzene that exceeded comparison values. The elevated air concentration events, however, were generally intermittent and brief. Exposure was further reduced because people likely kept their windows closed because of weather conditions.

RECOMMENDATION

At this time, no further actions are needed. If data become available suggesting that people are exposed to hazardous substances at levels of public health concern, the need for any follow-up at the site will be reevaluated.
