Based on the information reviewed, IDPH concludes that conditions at the Essex Group site currently poses no apparent public health hazard. Although site sampling activities have been limited, the known area of contaminated sediment is in a fenced, unaccessible area. The surface soil samples suggest the contamination is limited to the drainage ditch. Currently, workers are not likely exposed to the lead and chromium in the ditch.
Remove contaminated sediment or ensure that workers and future site visitors will not come into contact with the high levels of lead and chromium in the drainage ditch.
If data become available suggesting that human exposure to hazardous substances at levels of public health concern is occurring, the need for any follow-up at the site will be reevaluated.
