HEALTH CONSULTATION
MERVIS INDUSTRIES
MATTOON, COLES COUNTY, ILLINOIS
IDPH concludes that no apparent public health hazard presently exists from the contamination at Mervis Industries.
Although several contaminants were present at elevated levels, most were not present at levels of health concern. Piles of
scrap metal along the site access road and a pile of tires on the southwestern portion of the site present a physical hazard to
trespassers. Site access is not completely restricted because segments of the fence are in poor condition, making the site
accessible to trespassers, including children. No signs are posted to keep trespassers off the site.
IDPH recommends restricting site access to trespassers at the southern and eastern ends of the facility because of the
existing physical hazards and to prevent the possibility of young children playing on the site.
