PETITIONED PUBLIC HEALTH ASSESSMENT

HANSEN CONTAINERS
GRAND JUNCTION, MESA COUNTY, COLORADO

CONCLUSIONS

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) classifies the HansenContainers Site as a no public health hazard because the contaminants of concern wereeliminated from the site with the completion of the removal actions in 1996. As part ofthe removal process, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) removed 27,000 drums fromthe site, and the Department of Energy hauled off the debris from a 20,000 square-footwarehouse that EPA demolished. EPA stabilized and immobilized 12,000 tons of contaminatedsoil. The contaminated soil was mixed with a mix of cement and water to eliminate itspotential for migration from the site. After treating the soil, the Department of Energydisposed of the soil as mill tailings as part of the Uranium Mill Tailing Remedial Actionprogram. The EPA collected and analyzed independent clean-up confirmation samples of theremaining soils. ATSDR evaluated all the sampling data and the processes and determinedthat the contaminants were removed and no exposures or health effects can occur.
