Step 1.2 Gathering Health Concerns and Other Information

Introduction

Information about a site can be gathered in a number of ways, but a site visit plays a key role.

Purpose 1 – Observe current site conditions.
Purpose 2 – Observe ways that people use natural resources in the area.
Purpose 3 – Establish relationships with community members and others involved with work at the site.
Purpose 4 – Collect firsthand information about community health concerns.

What is the best approach for coordinating a site visit?

The health assessor should coordinate site visits with local ATSDR staff members; local, state, and other federal health and environmental agencies; community members; and other interested parties. These people can provide valuable information about a site.
