Enter an address on the map Search tab, by selecting criteria in the Advanced Map Search tab or by clicking the center of a state

To view a map at the national level:

  1. Select the Advanced Map Search tab
  2. Click the drop down arrow (Selection Arrow Button ) in the Contaminants box. (optional).
  3. Click on the Create Map button (Create Map Button) to display the data on national map.

To view a map at the regional level:

  1. Select the Advanced Map Search tab
  2. Click the empty box (Check Box - Not Checked Button) to the left of Check to use Regions. A checked box
    (Check Box - Checked Button) appears.
  3. Click the drop down arrow (Selection Arrow Button) in the Federal Regions field.
  4. Select a Federal Region.
  5. Click on the Create Map button (Create Map Button) to display the data in the selected Federal Region.

To view a map at the state level:

  1. Select the Advanced Map Search tab
  2. Click the drop down arrow (Selection Arrow Button) in the States and Territories field.
  3. Select a state.
  4. Click on the Create Map button (Create Map Button) to display the data in the selected state or territory.
  -or-
  1. Select either the Map Search or the Advanced Map Search tab
  2. Click the center of the desired state or territory from the national map.
  3. The map automatically displays data in the selected state or territory.

To view a map at the county level:

  1. Select the Advanced Map Search tab
  2. Click the drop down arrow (Selection Arrow Button) in the States and Territories field.
  3. Select a state.
  4. The county selection will automatically fill with county information.
  5. Click the drop down button (Selection Arrow Button) in the Counties field.
  6. Select a county.
  7. Click on the Create Map button (Create Map Button) to display the data in the selected county.

To view a map at the city level:

  1. Select the Advanced Map Search tab
  2. Click the empty radio button (Radio - Not Checked Button) to the left of City. A radio button with a
    dot (Radio - Checked Button) appears.
  3. Type a full or partial City in the text box field.
  4. Click on the Create Map button (Create Map Button) to display the data for the criteria entered.
  5. The map automatically displays data, if any, in the selected city. (If there are no data in the selected city, the following message displays: ‘No Information was found for the City entered.’).

To view a map at the zip code level:

  1. Select the Advanced Map Search tab
  2. Click the empty radio button () to the left of Zip Code. A radio button with a
    dot () appears.
  3. Type a full or partial Zip Code in the text box field.
  4. Click on the Create Map button (Create Map Button) to display the data for the criteria entered.
  5. The map automatically displays data, if any, in the selected Zip Code. (If there are data in the selected Zip Code, the following message displays: ‘No Information was found for the Zip Code entered.’).

To view a map by facility/site name:

  1. Select the Advanced Map Search tab
  2. Click the empty radio button (Radio - Not Checked Button) to the left of Facility/Site Name. A radio button with a
    dot (Radio - Checked Button) appears.
  3. Type a full or partial Facility/Site name in the text box field.
  4. Click on the Create Map button (Create Map Button) to display the data for the criteria entered.
  5. The map automatically displays data, if any, for the selected name. (It there are no data for the selected name, the following message displays: ‘No Information was found for the Name entered.’).

To view a map by data source:

  1. Select the Advanced Map Search tab
  2. Click the drop down arrow (Selection Arrow Button ) in the Data Sources field.
  3. Select a data source.
  4. Click on the Create Map button (Create Map Button) to display the data for the criteria entered.

To view a map by contaminant:

  1. Select the Advanced Map Search tab
  2. Click the drop down button (Selection Arrow Button) in the right-hand drop down list field under the Contaminants label.
  3. Select a contaminant.
  4. Click on the Create Map button (Create Map Button) to display the data for the criteria entered.
  -or-
  1. Select the Advanced Map Search tab
  2. Click the drop down button (Selection Arrow Button) in the Filter A-Z field.
  3. Select the first letter of the desired contaminant.
  4. The right-hand drop down list field under the Contaminants label is filtered for contaminants that begin with that letter.
  5. Click the drop down button (Selection Arrow Button) in the right-hand drop down list field under the Contaminants label.
  6. Select a contaminant.
  7. Click on the Create Map button (Create Map Button) to display the data for the criteria entered.

How do I view map features?

To view a map feature (e.g.  Roads, Schools, U.S. Congressional Districts):

  1. Click the empty box (Check Box - Not Checked Button) to the left of the desired feature. A checked box (Check Box - Checked) appears.
  2. Click on the Add/remove Features button (Add/Remove Button) to display or remove the map features selected.

    Note: Map features display at different resolutions. You may need to zoom in or out on the map to view map features.

How do I find the definition for the symbols and colors on the map?

To view the map legend:

  1. Click the Map Legend button (Map Legend Button)located on the upper right corner of the map.
  2. The map legend automatically displays with the definitions for the symbols and colors on the map.

    Note: As map features are selected, they are added to the map legend. By default, the U.S. States, Country, and Earth Grid display on the map legend.

How do I manipulate the map?

To resize the map (Zoom In and Zoom Out):

Zoom In

  1. Click the Zoom In button (Zoom In Button).
  2. The map automatically moves in for a closer view.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to continue zooming in.
 Zoom Out
  1. Click the Zoom In button (Zoom Out Button).
  2. The map automatically moves in for a closer view.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to continue zooming in.

To pan the map (North, East, Northeast, West, Northwest, South, Southeast, and Southwest):

  1. Click the desired navigational arrow from the map control (Map Nav) located in upper right corner of the map.
  2. The map automatically displays and moves in the selected direction.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to continue panning.


  4. Note: The map control can be hidden or opened by clicking the yellow area above the arrows.

To print the map:

  1. Click the Print Map button (Print Map Button).
  2. A new window opens displaying the current map.
  3. Click the Print Current Map button (Print Current Map Button).
  4. A Windows Print dialog box displays.
  5. Follow the instructions to print the map.

To save the map image:

  1. Click the Print Map button (Print Map Button).
  2. A new window opens displaying the current map.
  3. Right click on the map image.
  4. A pop-up menu displays.
  5. Click the Save Picture As option.
  6. A Windows Save Picture dialog box displays.
  7. Follow the instructions to name and save the image.

How do I view data?

To view the data table:

  1. The data table is located directly below the map.
  2. The data table displays site information automatically when the map is updated.

    Note: You must select search criteria before data is displayed in the data table.

To view the Site Information Sheet:

  1. Click the name of the facility or site in the Name column on the data table.
  2. A new window opens displaying the Site Information Sheet.
  -or-
  1. Click the facility or site symbol on the map.
  2. The Site Information Sheet displays.

    Note: If the facility or site you selected is in a cluster of points, a pop-up box displays with all facilities/sites in that cluster. Click the desired Facility or Site name from the list and the Site Information Sheet displays.

How do I manipulate the data?

To sort the data table alphabetically:

  1. Click the Name, City, County, State, or Zip Code column heading.
  2. The data sorts alphabetically from A to Z.
  3. Click the Name, City, County, State, or Zip Code column heading again.
  4. The data sorts alphabetically from Z to A.

To print the data table:

  1. Click the Print/Export button (Print Export Button).
  2. A new window opens displaying the current data table.
  3. Select the Print Site Information Sheet button
    (Print Site Information Button).
  4. A Windows Print dialog box displays.
  5. Follow the instructions to print the Site Information Sheet.

To open the data table in MS Excel:

  1. Click the Print/Export button (Print Export Button).
  2. A new window opens displaying the current data table.
  3. Select the Export to Excel button (Export to Excel Button).
  4. A Windows File Download dialog box appears.
  5. Follow the instructions to open the data table in MS Excel.

To export the data table in MS Excel:

  1. Click the Print/Export button (Print Export Button).
  2. A new window opens displaying the current data table.
  3. Select the Export to Excel button (Export to Excel Button).
  4. A Windows File Download dialog box appears.
  5. Follow the instructions to export the data table to MS Excel.

How do I view Environmental Programs and Resources?

To view environmental programs (i.e. NCEH/ATSDR programs and external programs) associated with my region:

  1. Select the Advanced Map Search tab
  2. Select a Federal Region.
  3. Click on the Create Map button (Create Map Button) to display the data for the criteria entered.
  4. The Environmental Programs and Resources display for the selected Federal Region located to the right of the map.
  5. Click the plus sign [+] in View [+] under the desired heading. Click [-] in View [-] to collapse the section.
  6. The list expands and the environmental programs display.
  7. Click a Program link.
  8. The program Web site opens in another browser window.

To view environmental programs (i.e. NCEH/ATSDR programs and external programs) associated with my state or territory:
