Key points
In the 'Screening Contaminants' section, you will discover the purpose and steps of the ATSDR's screening analysis used to identify contaminants that need further evaluation in the public health assessment (PHA) process.

Modules and Training Videos
- Public Health Assessment Training (PHAT) Module 6: Data Screening Analysis - In this online and interactive module, you will learn about the ATSDR's screening process used to select contaminants for further evaluation as part of the PHA process.
- Public Health Assessment Site Tool (PHAST) Webinar - In this recorded webinar, you will learn about ATSDR's PHAST, including the comparison value (CV) module. The CV module will allow you to enter site contaminant concentrations, which are then screened against ATSDR-generated CVs to determine the contaminants that you should further evaluate in the PHA process. You can find this webinar on the PHAST resource page under "PHAST Training" . It is titled "Intro to PHAST: CV Screen". To gain access to PHAST, send a request to phast@cdc.gov.
- Guidance for Calculating Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) Equivalents for Cancer Evaluations of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) Webinar - Watch this recorded webinar to learn the steps for calculating BaP equivalents for cancer evaluations of PAHs.
Guidance
- Public Health Assessment Guidance Manual (PHAGM)'s Screening Analysis Overview - In this PHAGM section, you will find information on how to use ATSDR CVs and non-ATSDR screening levels to screen sampling data and identify potential contaminants of concern that require further evaluation.
- Guidance for Calculating Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) Equivalents for Cancer Evaluations of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) - In this document you will find guidance on ATSDR's approach for calculating BaP equivalents.
- Guidance for Evaluating Vapor Intrusion Pathways - This document provides you with ATSDR's guidance for evaluating the public health implications of vapor intrusion. It contains information about using ATSDR's CVs for vapor intrusion.
Tools
- The Public Health Assessment Site tool (PHAST) is a web-based application to assist you, as a health assessor, in evaluating environmental data and performing complex dose calculations. Use PHAST's CV screening module to screen contaminants against ATSDR's recommended CVs for water, soil/sediment, air, and soil vapor intrusion. If recommended CVs are exceeded, select the contaminants for further evaluation in the PHA process. To request access to PHAST, send an e-mail to PHAST@CDC.gov.
