Section 1
1.3 Charge to the Panelists

ATSDR prepared a list of specific questions for the panel (referred to as the "charge"). Questions included a wide variety of topics designed to prompt discussions at the meeting. The main topics in the charge include:

  • Analytical methodologies
  • Factors influencing the interpretation of analytical results
  • Toxicologic considerations
  • Data gaps and research needs
  • Identifying scenarios for which hair analysis may be appropriate
  • A copy of the charge to the panelists is included in this report as Appendix B.

Prior to the June 12 and 13, 2001, meeting, panelists were requested to review the charge and prepare initial responses to the charge questions (in the form of pre-meeting comments). To support their effort, panelists received six papers from the published literature and a bibliography of additional literature pertaining to hair analysis1. The purpose of this pre-meeting exercise was to stimulate panelists' thoughts in relation to the charge questions and to serve as a stepping-off point for the 1½ days of panel discussions. Appendix C contains the panelists' pre-meeting comments.

Panelists provided additional relevant references with their pre-meeting comments and during panel discussions. An expanded bibliography of hair analysis literature is provided in Appendix D.

1The papers provided to the panelists for their consideration included: Hopps 1977; Miekeley et al. 1998; Sky-Peck 1990; Seidel et al. 2001; Steindel and Howanitz 2001 (editorial); Yoshinaga et al. 1990; Wennig 2000.
